To honor our father’s memory, we wanted to produce a wine our family and those who knew and loved him would enjoy. We wanted to ensure that wines with the Cache Creek Vineyards label were as good as they could possibly be. To accomplish that, we hired Derek Holstein in 2005 to be our winemaker.
Derek works closely with Don Van Pelt and Poncho Medina, our ranch foreman to refine our farming practices and enhance our best grape quality.
Derek Holstein is a well-known winemaking consultant who served as winemaker for 12 years at Guenoc, Lake County’s best-known winery. He has also worked closely with Beckstoffer Vineyards, The Girls in the Vineyard, Harris Tesla Vineyards, as well as Quercus Vineyards. Derek is intimately familiar with winegrowing in Lake County; Holstein specializes in Cache Creek’s three main varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Petite Sirah. Currently, Holstein crafts Cache Creek wines at Miner Winery in Napa Valley. Our list of award-winning wines is very impressive. For now, production is quite small, usually between 1,500 - 2,500 cases, but it may eventually rise to 4,000-5,000 cases.
Following is a snapshot of Derek’s winemaking philosophy:
“Fine wine is an art form for me, lending me the privilege of creative expression. It enriches and inspires my life, and I endeavor to spread that inspiration from farm to table. Commercial winemaking utilizes the talents of many, and I have often likened my role as winemaker to that of an orchestra conductor. The members I direct include vineyards and workers, weather, cellars, barrel makers, truck drivers, and more. Each contributes profoundly whether subtle or sublime. Mine is a challenge of vision and communication. For each unique harvest once again gifts our human hands with the glorious fruit of the vine. Time spent walking hill and valley vineyards tunes my heart and mind for what lies ahead. I merely read the signs, seeking to bring balance and cohesion. Each year I hope. May the gifts of that harvest, through loving care and collaboration create a thing of beauty.”
